IPL Auction 2019: Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube and the biggest gainers of IPL auction 2019

Some of the biggest surprise buys from IPL auction 2019

IPL Auction 2019

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 Players’ auction raised a lot of surprises as the franchises engaged in some intense bidding war at Jaipur on Tuesday. Young Indian players were the biggest winners of the day as some of them earned jackpot deals after starting out with a very low base price. There were some players who remained unsold but the focus will surely be on the young guns who now have the burden of big expectations as they head into the next IPL season. But for now, these players can sit back and embrace the limelight as the IPL auction 2019 turned a few of them into overnight millionaires. Let’s take a look at some of the most shockingly expensive buys from the IPL auction 2019:

1. Varun Chakravarthy – Kings XI Punjab (₹8.4 crore)

Termed as the mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy from Tamil Nadu boasts of having over seven variations of spin in his arsenal. After impressing everyone in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, the spinner was introduced to the IPL auctions on Tuesday with a base price of just ₹20 lakh. What followed was an intense bidding war between not one, but four teams as Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals bid furiously for the young spinner. Eventually Kings XI Punjab scooped the lad for a whopping ₹8.4 crore. This leaves him tied with Jaidev Unadkat for the title costliest player in this year’s IPL season.

2. Shivam Dube – Royal Challengers Bangalore (₹5 crore)

Mumbai-born Shivam Dube first grabbed headlines when he hit five sixes in an over bowled by Pravin Tambe in the Mumbai T20 league earlier this year. But what was interesting is that Dube repeated the exact same feat just a day before the IPL auction 2019 to reiterate his stake in the IPL next year. Naturally, franchisees came knocking and after starting out at a modest ₹20 lakh base price, he ended up earning a contract worth ₹5 crore.

3. Prabhsimran Singh – Kings XI Punjab (₹4.8 crore)

Kings XI Punjab had a very busy outing during the IPL Auctions 2019. After snapping Chakravarthy, Punjab went for another uncapped Indian, this time a local lad from Punjab. Prabhsimran who idolises Virender Sehwag, stormed into the spotlight when he scored 298 runs off 302 balls in an Under-23 tournament in Punjab. Prabhsimran started off at ₹20 lakhs but ended up taking home a contract worth ₹4.8 crore.

4. Akshdeep Nath – Royal Challengers Bangalore (₹3.6 crore)

After having three disappointing stints in the IPL, Akshdeep Nath has hit the jackpot this year with Royal Challengers Bangalore going all guns blazing for him. Nath, who found tremendous success in the junior tournaments, has since struggled in India’s domestic competitions. But despite having scored a combined total of just 53 runs in three seasons, Nath found himself taking home a contract of almost ₹3.6 crore, a 1700 per cent jump from his base price of ₹20 lakhs.

5. Mohit Sharma – Chennai Super Kings (₹5 crore)

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings were perhaps the most dormant IPL team in the auction on Tuesday. Out of the very few players they bid for, CSK managed to scoop pacer Mohit Sharma back to the side. This is Sharma’s second stint with the champions and will definitely be a happy after taking home a contract worth ₹5 crore.

6. Sam Curran – Kings XI Punjab (₹7.2 crore)

The Indian national team remembers this young lad very well. During India’s tour of England earlier this year, Curran was responsible for giving major headaches to the visitors with the bat and ball in the absence of Ben Stokes. A man with great potential, Curran started off in the auction with a base price of ₹2 crores but ended up going to KXIP for over ₹7.2 crore, making him the third costliest player this season.

7. Prayas Ray Barman – Royal Challengers Bangalore (₹1.5 crore)

The fact that Prayas Ray Barman makes this list is not only because of the money that he has managed to rake in but it also has more to do with how less we know about the boy that makes Prayas Ray Barman one of the surprise buys of the season. A leg-spinner from Bengal, the teenager made his debut for the state this year in the Vijay Hazare trophy. He picked up four wickets in his first match, and at only 16 years old has received a contract of ₹1.5 crore.
