In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) registered their name in history books as they fielded a young leg-spinner in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday. Prayas Ray Barman was handed his debut cap by RCB, with which he also became the youngest player to make debut in IPL history. It was a huge moment for Prayas - who is also a class 12 CBSE student.
At the age of 16 years and 157 days, Barman leapfrogged Afghanistan's spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman to become IPL's youngest debutant. The record was previously held by Mujeeb - whose debut came for Kings XI Punjab at the age of 17 years and 11 days.
Prayas might have been given the opportunity to lock horns against some of the biggest names in world cricket, but the teenager is simultaneously also managing his studies. Prayas studies at Kalyani Public School in Kolkata.
Prayas, who replaced Navdeep Saini for the match, had a forgettable debut as he conceded 56 runs and went wicketless. RCB bowlers were taken to cleaners by SRH openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow who stitched a third successive century stand for the opening wicket.
Describing how his son is managing studies as well as cricket, Prayas' father Dr Kaushik Ray Barman told PTI, "It's tough but he is managing it. He has the full support of the team."
Barman added how RCB captain Virat Kohli changed his mind at the last moment to hand Prayas his debut cap. “(Virat) Kohli, AB (de Villiers) and (coach Gary) Kirsten are obviously encouraging him at the nets. Obviously, they have seen some potential in him to pick him ahead of the experienced duo of (Pawan) Negi and Washington Sundar. The call-up was completely unexpected for him as at first the team think-tank had decided to go for a seam-attack but skipper Kohli told Prayas of the debut just minutes before going for the toss. We were shocked to see his name in the line-up in RCB’s very third match. But he was not nervous,” his dad said.
RCB have had a forgettable outing so far in IPL 2019 where they have lost three matches in a row. What would hurt RCB think tank the most is the fact that the top order - which comprises world-class batsman in Kohli, AB de Villiers and Simron Hyetmer has failed to deliver as a unit on a consistent basis. RCB were skittled out for just 70 runs in their opening match against Chennai Super Kings after which they were defeated by Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next two matches.
